A fishing vessel sank in the Barents Sea on 28 December. A search is currently underway to locate vessel and its crew.
The Onega, with a crew of 19, sank somewhere off the coast of Novaya Zemlya, an archipelago north of Russia, and sent out a distress call. Reports suggest freezing temperatures and unfavourable weather caused the loss of the vessel.
Another vessel found and rescued two of the crew, while a third had died in the water. Rescue ships are currently searching for the rest of the crew, but conditions in the area are poor, and it has been reported that aircraft cannot safely be used in the weather conditions.
