Monsoon rains fell across large areas of India with the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar being the worst affected. More than 100 people are reported to have been killed and many more displaced.
The death toll in Bihar reached 29, according to the state disaster management authority. The impact on its main city, Patna, has seen roads closed and people navigating the waters by boat.
In eastern Uttar Pradesh, flooding caused officials to relocate more than 500 prisoners from the Ballia district jail to other prisons. Local offficials spoke to the media explaining that the amount of rain was "completely unexpected".
In many areas the flood waters have mixed with sewage which has entered buildings forcing the evacuation of homes, schools and hospitals.
The state government has asked the Indian Air Force for helicopters and water pumps to aid with relief efforts.
